Muskingum University’s WMCO 90.7 FM Receives Spirit of College Radio AwardWMCO 90.7 FM, Muskingum University’s radio station, was one of the 2023 Spirit of College Radio Award winners for the second year in a row. The Spirit of College Radio Awards are presented by the College Radio Foundation in recognition of truly outstanding and spirited efforts made by college radio stations on World College Radio Day, which occurred on Oct. 6.
“Receiving this award for the second year in a row makes me feel as if WMCO is heard, both literally and figuratively. Radio is a medium that some think is dead or not as important as it once was, but that just isn’t true,” said WMCO Program Director Kailyn Shalosky ’23. “Our WMCO DJs put a lot of work into making sure the importance of college radio was shared.”
Stations are voted for by the team that organizes World College Radio Day, who seek to shine a spotlight on college radio stations that not only go above and beyond to celebrate the annual WCRD event but also embody the passion and mission of college radio. Out of the hundreds of stations that participate, only10 stations are chosen.
WMCO hosted 12 hours of live programming on World College Radio Day as well as reached out to alumni and supporters. “A project I am personally so proud of is the alumni response we got. We had a dozen or so alumni send us what college radio did for them, and why they think it’s still important today. It builds long lasting connections with people you may not have even met in person,” Shalosky said.
Commenting on the winners, Dr. Rob Quicke, Founder of College Radio Day, said: “We congratulate all these stations for their brilliant efforts. This year our theme for the day was Where All Voices Are Welcome and many stations did 24 hours of extraordinary events and programming. Well done to all the stations who have won this award.”
Founded in 2010, the aim of College Radio Day is to raise a greater, international awareness of the many college and high school radio stations that operate around the world by encouraging people who would not normally listen to college radio to do so on this day. It is hoped that those people who do tune in like what they hear and become regular listeners.
WMCO 90.7 FM is licensed to Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio as a non-commercial, educational radio station and serves east-central Ohio including the cities of Zanesville and Cambridge from the antenna site on Muskingum’s campus.
