Celebrating Student Achievement: Science & Art
Muskingum University held its annual celebrations of student-led scientific research and of artworks created by members of its graduating senior class.
During the James R. Bradford Colloquium on April 18, outstanding seniors selected by the science faculty presented their capstone scholarship work. This year’s student presenters represented the molecular biology and neuroscience programs, and the departments of biology, chemistry, and psychology.
The Homer A. Anderson Lecture and Student Poster Presentation was held on April 21.
This year’s Anderson Lecture was given by ophthalmologist Dr. Craig Miller ’08, who reflected on the impact of his educational experience at Muskingum and his professional journey, which included earning his M.D. degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Miller completed his internship at Mount Carmel West (Columbus, Ohio) and his residency in ophthalmology at The Ohio State University/Havener Eye Center, where he was Chief Resident. He is currently in private practice, serving the Southeast Ohio region.
The accompanying Anderson Student Poster Session included 40 posters describing student research projects that have taken place during the past year through collaborative work with faculty as well as internships with organizations such as The Wilds, the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District, and Breaking Free Therapeutic Riding Center.
Muskingum University faculty judge the student presentations at both the Bradford Colloquium and the Anderson Poster Session. The top three presenters at each event are recognized through presentation awards supported by the Carolyn and Glenn Hodges Student Research Fund.
Bradford Colloquium honorees were: First Place: Rachel Hankin ’22, Molecular Biology; Second Place: Remie Helt ’22, Biology; Third Place: Mariah Ridgeway ’22, Neuroscience.
Anderson Poster Session awardees were: First Place: Rachel Hankin ’22, Chemistry; Second Place: Oliver Rogers ’22 and Taylor Shimek ’23, Biology; Third Place: Nathan Montecalvo ’23 and Tanner Vernon ’23, Chemistry.
The 2022 Senior Art Exhibition was held from April 6-26, 2022 at the Louis O. Palmer Gallery on campus. More than 60 artworks by Class of 2022 members Bethany Dawson ’22, Talia Klink ’22, Macey Mills ’22, Emilee Neff ’22, Hannah Wilson ’22, and Shuning Zhang ’22 were on display. The artists were honored during an Opening Reception on April 6.
