Fall Student Scholarship Forum: Experiential Learning

Muskingum University’s Fall Student Scholarship Forum showcased student experiential learning in research, internships, and other scholarly activities conducted during the summer and fall of 2024.

The Forum was held on Thursday, Oct. 17 in Boyd Science Center, with the students presenting posters describing their achievements and how these experiences enhanced their education at Muskingum.

A second poster presentation was given for the University’s Board of Trustees as part of their Friday, Oct. 18 meeting, and the poster displays remained available for viewing in Boyd during throughout the October 18-20 Magenta Homecoming Weekend.

A wide variety of research topics were presented by students from the following departments:

  • Biology – “Conservation Intern at Preservation Parks” by Aiden Gaedcke ’25; “Education and Animal Care at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium’s Education Department” by Haley Maksin ’25; “Shrub Trends at the Wilds and How It Affects the Presence/Absence of Obligate Grassland Birds” by Eric Pascual ’27, Kalaina Moellendick ’27, and Alexis Lousha ’25; and “Grassland Bird Population Trends” by Shawna Wickman ’26, Savannah Offenberger ’26, and Ethan Carpenter ’27.
  • Chemistry – “Effects of Agriculture Runoff on Water Quality” by Gracyn Armstrong ’27; “Synthesizing Promoieties for Multiple Myeloma Prodrugs” by Taylor Metz ’26 with Assistant Professor of Chemistry Daniel Goetz; and “Purification of Triarylmethane Dyes” by Matthew Vascura ’26 with Dr. Goetz and Associate Professor of Chemistry Seth Barrett.
  • Geology – “Applications of Geology and Environmental Planning to the Industrial Workforce” by Jared Dobson ’26;  “Determining the Proper Drill Point for Carbon Capture on an Anticline Formation” by Wesley Ellsworth ’25; and “2024 Iowa State Geology Field Camp” by Riley Norris ’25.
  • History – “Working At the Age of Steam Roundhouse” by Chase Haver ’26;  “Tour Guide at the National Road, Zane Grey Museum” by Wesley Nestor ’25; and “What Do Local Historical Societies Do?” by Aidan West ’27.
  • “Nursing” – Nutritional Support for the Mind: The Effects of Vitamins and Supplements on Mental Health by Gretchen Pfundstein ’25.
  • World Languages – “¡Pura Vida! My Study Abroad Trip to Costa Rica” by Reniyah Dale ’25.
