Muskingum University Receives $1.1 Million J.W. and M.H. Straker Foundation Grant
New Concord, OH (May 11, 2021) – The J.W. and M.H. Straker Foundation awarded Muskingum University $1.1 million to support the Henry D. Bullock Health and Wellness Complex (BHWC). The grant will support the BWHC wellness corridor with a state-of-the art diagnostic hub and fitness center.
The Bullock Health and Wellness Complex, currently under construction, is a 119,000-square-foot facility that will transform Muskingum’s student experience and expand the University’s regional role in community health and wellness, workforce development, and technological innovation.
“With the generosity of the J.W. and M.H. Straker Foundation, the University will continue to develop and shape community partnerships that will greatly benefit the region and enrich STEM and health sciences programing and career development opportunities for students and adult learners,” said Muskingum University President Susan S. Hasseler. “This will build a well-trained, local workforce to sustain our region and enhance our local economy for generations to come.”
The diagnostic hub will be a 3,000-square-foot location for training, research and development in health and wellness. It is envisioned as a center for learning, workforce development, innovative research, and diagnosis and treatment services for students and area residents – in collaboration with healthcare providers, educational institutions, business and industry, and technology entrepreneurs. The Diagnostic Hub will feature state-of-the-art equipment and technology that focuses on range of motion, metabolics, and physical performance, including both diagnostic and fitness machines with virtual functioning.
Adjacent to the diagnostic hub, will be a 3,200 square foot fitness center. It will be outfitted with the latest equipment for diagnosis and treatment of injuries as well as for general fitness use by students, faculty, and staff.
The $1.1 million grant is in addition to a $150,000 gift from the Foundation last year also in support of the BHWC. The J.W. and M.H Straker Foundation supports programs that “enable young people to grow in character and integrity, initiatives that enhance education, and projects that increase community exposure to the arts and sciences.”
