Spotlight on Learning: Sustainability
Muskingum University offers multiple learning opportunities for our students on critical environmental sustainability issues, both in the classroom and through hands-on field research alongside our faculty members.
Students can choose from courses offering a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives on the sustainability topics. Classes range from Environmental Issues, Environmental Ethics, American Environmental History and Environmental Sociology to Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Conservation Biology, and Conservation Science.
Each year, several students join Dr. Jim Dooley, Bill and Martha Lovejoy Professor of Biology, and Dr. Danny Ingold, Homer A. Anderson Distinguished Professor of Natural Science, in researching grassland bird habitats on a reclaimed surface mine, The Wilds. Dr. Dooley and Dr. Ingold’s partnership with The Wilds has been ongoing for more than 20 years.
Students are also selected to work annually with Dr. Lois Zook-Gerdau, Professor of Chemistry, on her water quality research studying the Salt Creek Watershed in partnership with the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District. Dr. Zook-Gerdau’s project has been ongoing since 2005.
