Students, staff pitch in with Habitat for Humanity
More than a dozen Muskingum College students and a member of the college’s staff will join in this year’s Habitat for Humanity “Collegiate Challenge.”
This is the 11th year that Muskingum College students have spent their spring break helping this international organization, which has built more than 200,000 houses that provide shelter for more than 1 million people in 3,000 communities worldwide.
The students will travel to New Orleans, LA during the week of March 5 to help build affordable housing for those who are recovering from Hurricane Katrina.
The following students and staff will make the trip: Tiffany McCarty '07, Jason Tarbert '08, Jonathan Grennell '08, Jessica Stroup '07, Jason Esselbrun '07, Kayla Sherman '10, Amanda Herbst '10, Genny Rohrbough '08,
Kayleigh Pangle '07, Khristena Martin '10, Laura Barkalow '10, Ryan Olterman '10, Stephanie Saling '09 and Valerie Smith, coordinator of international student services.
In addition to volunteering their spring break for this effort, the group raised the money needed to fund the trip with a wide range of activities, including working as servers at a Pizza Hut in Zanesville and holding numerous bake sales. They also worked as servers at a local Denny’s restaurant, which donated a percentage of the day’s receipts to the effort. The group at Muskingum is advised by Assistant Professor of History Dr. Laura Hilton.
The Muskingum College students join more than 12,500 of their peers from across the country in 235 locations as part of this year’s “Collegiate Challenge” program.
