Faculty member Sue Peyton named “Outstanding Cooperating Teacher of the Year”
Sue Chase Peyton, a kindergarten teacher at Duncan Falls Elementary School and a member of Muskingum College’s adjunct faculty, has been named the “Outstanding Cooperating Teacher of the Year” by the Ohio Association of Teacher Educators.
The award honors a classroom teacher who cooperates with local colleges by hosting and mentoring students teachers. Peyton was nominated by faculty and staff at Muskingum College.
"She is one of those once-in-a-lifetime teachers,” said Vicki Wilson, who at the time of the nomination was professor of education at Muskingum. "With the patience of a kindergarten teacher, the sense of fun of a middle school teacher, the demand for rigor of a high school teacher, and the questioning and truth-seeking mind of a brilliant college teacher, Sue encourages us all to use our best to promote the lives of the children and young adults entrusted to our care."
Peyton teaches graduate and undergraduate adult learners at Muskingum College in Language, Literacy and Communication and in Phonices and the Reading Process.
"Sue exemplifies what it means to be a 'teacher of teachers,'" according to Kathy Brown, graduate faculty coordinator at Muskingum. "She makes a point to ensure that student teachers have the opportunity to spend time in her kindergarten class to witness ‘theory into practice."
"Once their student teaching has been completed, the students, without exception, rate their experience in Peyton’s classroom as life changing and one that will impact their teaching forever," said Brown.
An indicator of her unique teaching style is Peyton’s presentation of material to her Duncan Fall’s kindergarten class while she is dressed as a specific character, presenting the lesson in character.
