Muskingum participates in two programs to help veterans further their education
Muskingum University is participating in two Federal programs that can help veterans of the U.S. military advance their education.
The Post-9/11 G..I. Bill and the Yellow Ribbon G. I. Education Enhancement Program both make higher education affordable for veterans who qualify, and each offers different levels of support for various levels of qualification based on military service.
The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. An honorable discharge is required to be eligible for the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill.
The bill will become effective for training on or after August 1, 2009. The amount of support that an individual may qualify for depends on where they live and what type of degree they are pursuing.
Approved training under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill includes graduate and undergraduate degrees, and vocational/technical training. All training programs must be offered by an institution of higher learning and approved for G.I. Bill benefits. Additionally, tutorial assistance, as well as licensing and certification test reimbursement, are approved under the bill.
The Yellow Ribbon G.I. Education Enhancement Program, also known as the Yellow Ribbon Program, is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the Veteran’s Administration (VA) to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate.
As a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, Muskingum University and the VA agree to cover all remaining tuition costs beyond the state’s maximum tuition rate, meaning that qualifying veterans will be able to attend Muskingum tuition-free for as long as they remain eligible. This includes the Muskingum Adult Program (MAP) which offers flexible class schedules for working adults who wish to complete a bachelor’s degree.
To encourage participation in the program, Muskingum University will have an information booth at the Muskingum County Fair, which takes place August 16 – 22. At the booth, university staff will be present to answer questions, and information will be available on both of these programs as well as the university itself.
