Political Scientist Dr. Arnold presents at University of Toronto
Dr. Richard Arnold, associate professor of political science at Muskingum University and an expert on ethnic violence in the Russian Federation (focusing on Russia’s burgeoning skinhead movement), spoke October 21 at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies. His presentation, in which he said that violent racist crimes have reached worrisome levels in contemporary Russia, was featured in the Times of Israel.
Dr. Arnold is a regular contributor to the Eurasia Daily Monitor on topics such as the Kremlin’s approach toward Russian nationalists, on extremist nationalists, and on that government’s ban of “the Russians.” He frequently writes for the Jamestown Foundation’s blogs on Russian and Eurasia. Most recently, he authored "Social Protests in Russia Repeatedly Force Kremlin to Respond" for the Eurasia Daily Monitor.
He was guest editor on a special edition of Problems of Post-Communism on the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, which was published in January/February 2014.
Dr. Arnold is at work on a book provisionally titled Ethnic Violence and Russian Nationalism: From Graffitti to Genocide which analyzes neo-Nazi violence, Cossack violence against Meskhetian Turks, and ethnic Russian race riots in the Russian Federation.
He earned a doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University. Now an American citizen, Dr. Arnold was born in the United Kingdom and attended the University of York as an undergraduate. In September 2015, he was honored by Muskingum University with the William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship.
