Muskingum to grant credit through the Ohio Chautauqua Teacher’s InstituteThis summer, the Ohio Chautauqua Teacher’s Institute, in conjunction with the Ohio Humanities Council, will bring the Inventors and Innovators Tour to New Concord. Muskingum College will provide area educators with an opportunity to earn college credit for their participation in the institute. Running from Tuesday, June 24 through Saturday, June 28, the 2008 Ohio Chautauqua Teacher’s Institute is designed for humanities educators in grades K-12 and will explore the life stories of five great American inventors and innovators – Thomas Edison, Mary McLeod Bethune, Andrew Carnegie, George Washington Carver and Alexander Graham Bell – the challenges they faced, and their sources of inspiration.
"Through its first-person historical portrayals, Ohio Chautauqua delivers an exciting blend of education and entertainment from which educators can draw to develop creative and effective lesson plans,” said Dr. William Kerrigan, professor of history at Muskingum College. Participants will attend workshops conducted by the five scholar-performers portraying the Inventors and Innovators, seminars led by college faculty, and evening performances under the Chautauqua tent. They will receive materials for use in the classroom, and have opportunities to develop lesson plans based on content and principles acquired at the Institute.
Registered participants will have the option of earning professional development credits or credit toward an academic degree. Registration is now open.
