New Concord Community Day: Sept. 2In February 2023, the Washington Post ranked New Concord as the 24th Ultimate College Town. To continue to strengthen the connection between the Village of New Concord and the campus community, the Friends of New Concord are hosting New Concord Community Day. On Saturday, Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., there will be a day full of activities geared to Muskingum University students as well as activities for the entire community.
Shop Walk
Geared to Muskingum University students, the first event is a Shop Walk for students to get to know the community and its businesses, and for the businesses to welcome our students to the Village. New Concord businesses that have goods or services that may be of value and interest to our students have registered to participate in the event. Students will visit each business, have them sign their Shop Walk card, and turn in their signed cards at the football game where they will be entered into a drawing to win one of several gift baskets. Many of the businesses will be giving students coupons or other items during their visit.
Vendors’ Village
The entire community is invited to the Vendors’ Village from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. where artisans will be selling a variety of locally made products from jewelry, clothing, soaps and home décor to nuts, home-baked cookies and more. Artisans will be set up throughout the day in the Genesis Primary Care parking lot. There also will be activities for kids including a coloring contest and yard games. The family also can enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through New Concord.
Muskie Game Time
The community is invited to Muskingum University’s football season home opener, where community members will receive free admission. The Friendship 7 a cappella group will perform the national anthem, and student winners from the morning’s Shop Walk will be announced. Everyone is invited to join the fun at 1 p.m. and cheer on the Fighting Muskies.
Party in the Park
After the football game, there will be a Party in the Park at New Concord War Memorial Park. The event will have live music from Fly Ohio, featuring Muskingum’s Jim Dooley, and the Steve Spires Band. There also will be a rock-climbing wall, axe throwing, corn hole tournaments and other yard games. There will be food trucks offering dinner and dessert as well as a bonfire to cap off the evening. The Party in the Park goes until 10 p.m.
All the community events throughout the day are free. We look forward to seeing faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the greater community at the 2023 New Concord Community Day.
