Assistant Professor of Education

The Department of Education Studies at Muskingum University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Education at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in Fall 2024.  

The position requires:

  • teaching in the undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs
  • supervising students in K-12 fieldwork placements
  • advising of licensure candidates
  • conducting research in the field of education
  • maintaining national accreditation and compliance with all state regulations and directives related to the Science of Reading
  • engaging in university and service

Teaching responsibilities will include courses with a content focus in the science of reading, literacy, assessment, language arts, and other topics supporting the education curriculum and the continuum of courses supporting literacy. Advising responsibilities will include mentoring Education students as they work toward completing state licensure requirements and the University’s academic requirements for graduation. Outreach activities include coordinating annual events with local school districts, their students, and staff, enabling connections with the broader community. Assessment responsibilities will include Key Program Assessments and Key Licensure Assessments connected to the seven licensure courses in the Literacy Education program: EDUC 370, 371, 413, and 414.

Applicants are expected to have doctoral-level preparation in reading, literacy, or curriculum and instruction plus tested experience in the science of reading. Candidates who are ABD will be considered with the understanding that the doctoral degree will be completed within one year, and rank will be at instructor upon hire until the doctoral degree is earned. Strong preference will be given to those who have teaching experience in a K-12 setting. Consideration will be given to applicants with background and experience across grade levels and activities aligned to literacy education.

Muskingum is a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts tradition located just seventy miles east of Columbus, Ohio, in the village of New Concord. The university’s total undergraduate, graduate, and adult-learner student population is approximately 2,500.
