Ohio Poet Laureate Visits Campus
Ohio Poet Laureate Kari Gunter-Seymour visited Muskingum University’s campus on Nov. 7, 2023.
She delivered a poetry reading of her works, covering Appalachian life, childhood memories, and even Joe Burrow, as well as visited a creative writing class.
Kari is a 9th generation Appalachian and editor of I Thought I Heard A Cardinal Sing, Ohio’s Appalachian Voices, funded by the Academy of American Poets and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, through a 2021 Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship grant.
Her poetry collections include Alone in the House of My Heart (Ohio University Swallow Press, 2022), A Place So Deep Inside America It Can’t Be Seen (Sheila Na Gig Editions, 2020), and Dirt Songs (forthcoming EastOver Press, 2024). She is also the editor of the Women of Appalachia Project’s anthology series, Women Speak, and her work has been featured in the New York Times, Verse Daily, World Literature Today, and on Poem-a-Day.
Professor of English and Division Chair of Arts and Humanities Jane Varley hosted Kari’s visit.
