COMMUNICATION, MEDIA, AND THEATRE

Assistant Professor of Media Communication Michael Carvaines won the Best Short Screenplay Award at the 2022 KinoDrome International Film Festival for his original narrative film "Daphne M."

Shawn Starcher, Assistant Professor of Communication, recently had his research featured on the Psychology Today website, focusing on how parents should approach talking to children about mental health. The feature was co-written with preeminent family communication scholar Dr. Dawn O. Braithwaite.

ENGLISH

Visiting Associate Professor of English Todd Comer presented "What Can Be Learned at the Intersection of Disability Studies and Ecocriticism: Or, Thoughts on Wall-E, the Happily Deranged Trash Compactor," at the annual conference of the Midwest Popular Culture Association, October 14-16, 2022, in Chicago, Illinois.

MUSIC

Erin Bauer, Associate Professor of Musicology and Chair of the Music Department, recently published two articles “The Absence of Texas-Mexican Musics at the South by Southwest Festival” in the Journal of Popular Music Studies  and “Defining Conjunto Quantitatively: Classical and Modernist Styles in a Texas-Mexican Genre" in American Music.  Her forthcoming book, Flaco's Legacy: The Globalization of Conjunto (University of Illinois Press, May 2023) was recently awarded an AMS 75 PAYS publication subvention from the American Musicological Society, which facilitates the publication of original and significant research.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Associate Professor of Political Science Richard Arnold published four recent articles, “The Ghosts of ‘Taras Bul’ba’”, “30,000 Young People in Cossack Education”, “School Shooting in Izhevsk: A Specter of Further Anti-State Violence in Russia?”, and “Russian Cossacks’ Integration With the State” in The Jamestown Foundation’s Eurasia Daily Monitor.  He also released an educational video “Cossacks: A Legacy Divided”, which explores Ukrainian and Russian Cossack identity throughout history and in today’s conflict.

SOCIOLOGY AND HEALTH STUDIES

Beginning January 1, 2023, Professor of Health Studies Hallie Baker will also serve her field as Managing Editor of Gerontology and Geriatrics Education, the official journal of the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education
