Janice Neill Hoffman, Class of 1963

Janice Lee Hoffmann (Neill) of Plum passed away peacefully from complications of a stroke on September 22, 2022, at the age of 81. Jan was born in Baldwin, PA on April 27, 1941, daughter of the late Martha J. Neill (Miller) and Everett H. Neill, Sr. Jan grew up in Baldwin, PA and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1959. She went on to graduate from Muskingum (College) University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. Jan met her husband Clarence A. Hoffmann, Jr. on a blind date at Muskingum in 1960. Clarence was a year younger than Jan and had to ask an upper classman to a school dance. They married on June 13, 1964, and soon after moved to Wheeling, WV where Jan worked as a social worker until the birth of their first child, Stacy. The family eventually settled in Plum where son Tod and daughter Shea were born. As a stay-at-home mom Jan took her children to their many activities and became involved in the community, becoming president of the East Plum Women's Club. Jan studied dance as a child and passed on that love of dance to her two daughters, Stacy and Shea. She nurtured both of them on to full college performing group scholarships. Jan also worked for Giant Eagle for many years as a claims secretary. She was an avid bridge player, making many friends and playing several days per week in many different bridge groups. She was a collector of bells and dolls and in her later years she enjoyed car rides with Clarence where they visited estate sales and flea markets. They often took weekend trips to visit friends and family. Jan always had a quick smile and kind words to all she came in contact with, making many friends throughout all her years. Friends and family say she was "just a sweetheart". Jan was preceded in death by her parents, along with brother Everett H. Neill, Jr. and sister-in-law Paula L. Neill (Prince)She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Clarence, of Plum and three children, Stacy (Peter) Sylvester, Tod (Kara) Hoffmann and Shea (Jim) Murtaugh, and her two grandsons, Garrett Sylvester and Tyler Hoffmann. She is further survived by her sisters-in-law Lynn (the late Bruce) Heckel and Marcia (Robert) Chocinsky, and nieces and nephew, Terri, Dawn, Robert and their families. Affectionately known as Jannie, she is further survived by numerous cousins within her mother's family.
