Art
Professor of Art Yan Sun was named a Signature Artist of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMS) and had three paintings selected for the 28th Annual Maritime National Art Exhibition, Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, Oregon, July 9-Sept. 24, 2022. An additional work, “Summertime”, was selected for the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Exhibition at James R. Ross Fine Art, Indianapolis, Indiana, Oct. 6-28, 2022.
Communication, Media, and Theatre
An original short story by Assistant Professor of Communication Rachel Pollock was selected by Vocal as one of 25 Grand Prize winners from among 13,000 entries. “Exit Wound” will be published in Vocal’s first book, a collection of short stories by vocal media creators.
Assistant Professor of Communication Shawn Starcher co-authored “Student-Instructor Communication During a Crisis: College Students’ Disclosures About Academic Struggles and Perceived Instructor Supportiveness and Flexibility During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” in the Atlantic Journal of Communication.
English
Associate Professor of English Kekoa Kaluhiokalani produced two plays at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival: “Marriage: A Work in Progress” and “August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned.” Both garnered strong reviews, with “How I Learned What I Learned” receiving a 5-star rating from British Theatre Guide, a 4-star rating from The Guardian, and inclusion in the Time Out list of “15 We Can’t Wait to See.”
Health
Assistant Professor of Public Health Studies Kristen DeBois recently coauthored two articles accepted for publication: “Mixed Methods Secondary Analysis of Older Adult Homicide-Suicides from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) Data” for the American Journal of Qualitative Research and “The Association Between Coping Strategies, Resilience, and Flourishing Among Students at a Large U.S. University during the COVID-19 Pandemic” for Building Healthy Academic Communities Journal.
History
Professor of History Karen Dunak co-authored Of the People: A History of the United States, 5th Edition (Oxford University Press, 2021). She also made a recent media appearance on Newsy “The Why” discussing her book As Long as We Both Shall Love: The White Wedding in Postwar America (NYU Press, 2013) in the relation to the 2022 “Wedding Boom.”
Professor of History Laura Hilton presented her research on rumors in post-World War II Germany at the German Historical Institute’s “Knowledge on the Move” conference held at the University of Southern California. The conference workshop explored how Jews and non-Jews shared and discussed knowledge of the Holocaust and its aftermath.
Mathematics & Computer Science
Assistant Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science Alisa Neeman presented a paper “Developing a Cross-Platform Mobile Course Using a Multi-Paradigm Framework,” at a recent Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges conference. The paper, which was also published in the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges, described her course where students learned theoretical concepts and applied them to create iPhone and Android apps such as a sliding puzzle piece game and a geo-tracking app for Muskingum’s campus.
Political Science
Associate Professor of Political Science Richard Arnold had three recent articles “Caught in Conflict: Ahiska Turks and the Russo-Ukrainian War,” “Russia’s Increasing Use of Cossack Reservists Highlights Manpower Shortage,” and “The Russian Far Right and the War in Ukraine” published in The Jamestown Foundation’s Eurasia Daily Monitor. He has also received a grant from the National Council for East European and Eurasian Research for his Fall 2022 semester sabbatical research on Ukrainian and Russian Cossacks.
