Elverne McCoy Tipton, Class of 1943
Elverne (Sunny) Tipton, 99, died peacefully at home Feb. 18, 2021. She was born Elverne McCoy June 26, 1921, in Hanover, Pa. She graduated from Muskingum College in 1943 and began her career as an elementary school teacher in Lorain, Ohio. She married her husband, Bob, in 1944. After living all over the country, they settled in Monroe in 1960 with their three daughters. Sunny taught fourth grade at Monroe Elementary School for eight years. and Bob worked as an AFDC caseworker for the Maine Department of Social Services. Sunny went on to teach sixth grade at Searsport Elementary School for three years until both she and Bob retired in 1973. In 2003 she and Bob moved from Maine to southern California to be closer to their family and enjoy milder winters. Sunny was a member of the Monroe Community Church until 1970, when she joined St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Belfast. She and Bob sang in the church choir for 10 years. She played piano at the Bradbury Manor Nursing Home and Harbor Hill Care Center for the residents' Sunday services for 25 years. She was well loved by all who knew her for her kind, sweet, gentle nature and her sunny outlook on life. She was always devoted to her family, loyal and generous with friends. She kept in close contact, with extensive written correspondence and visits. She loved books, nature, music, conversation, children and cats. She was a wonderful cook and baker, well known for her blueberry pies and Christmas fudge. She and Bob enjoyed hiking, camping, swimming and driving trips throughout their years. Sunny was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 2008. Survivors include her daughters, Judith Shester and husband Alex of Carlsbad, Calif., Connie York of Taos, N.M. and Cynthia Tipton of La Jolla, Calif.; her grandchildren, Geoffrey, Blake, Ashleigh, Eliot, Zachary and Jamison; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Pressley McCoy, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
