Dr. Bill Gegas ‘79: Keeping Worthington Industries Families Safe
As Medical Director for global diversified metals manufacturer Worthington Industries, Dr. Bill Gegas wears multiple hats. He leads the operation of the company’s free-standing medical facility and pharmacy, practices as a primary care physician for Worthington employees and their families, and provides background and guidance to Worthington’s chief executives for health-related issues and decision-making. Dr. Gegas also serves on the teaching staff for medical schools of The Ohio State University and Ohio University.
“The biggest challenge in the COVID-19 crisis is keeping our employees and their families safe in the midst of the day-to-day uncertainties,” Dr. Gegas said. “Recommendations and data are changing frequently and are sometimes contradictory. It is critically important to provide education as well as health care.”
“The vast majority of Worthington employees and their families in the Columbus area choose to access their medical care through our clinic,” Dr. Gegas explains. “We are a source of stability for them, and I’m inspired every day by the dedication of our medical staff. Practicing in the current environment and supporting our patients’ physical and psychological wellness truly underscores why we are in the field of family medicine.”
“My years at Muskingum fostered my sense of independence, independent thinking, and adaptability in approaching problems,” Dr. Gegas recalls. “Now more than ever, these qualities are absolutely critical in working through the COVID-19 issues in an environment of limited scientific data resources.”
“As professionals and as students, we all have strengths and weaknesses. In times like these, we need to draw on our strengths and acknowledge our weaknesses clearly, so that we can improve upon those areas. And that’s an ability I think all Muskies share.”
Dr. Gegas majored in biology and chemistry at Muskingum. He earned his M.D. degree from The Ohio State University and his M.B.A. degree from the Keller Graduate School of Management. Prior to joining Worthington Industries, he served as Associate Residency Director for Family Practice at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He began his career in private family medicine practice in Portsmouth, Ohio.
