“Fire & Fury, Darkness & Light” Concert Set for May 5, 2019
, The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, the Muskingum University Concert Choir and the Muskingum Choral Society will present a special concert on Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m. in Brown Chapel on the University’s campus.
The program will feature the choirs and Symphonic Winds joining forces on Jake Runestad's Proud Music of the Storm, on a poem of the same name by Walt Whitman.
This premiere transcription for chorus and wind ensemble was commissioned by the Muskingum University choirs and the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, in celebration of this 200th anniversary year of Walt Whitman's birth.
An award-winning composer who has been called “one of the best of the young American composers” by the Chicago Tribune, Mr. Runestad has written numerous works for wind ensemble, choir, chamber ensembles, orchestra, and opera.
The original setting of Proud Music of the Storm, scored for chorus and orchestra, was commissioned by the Dallas Symphony Chorus, Joshua Habermann, conductor, and premiered on October 8, 2017.
Dr. David Turrill, Muskingum University Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands, conducts the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds. The MVSW, funded in part by the Ohio Arts Council, is comprised of professional and talented amateur musicians from throughout southeastern Ohio. The MVSW is open by audition to Muskingum University students, faculty, and staff. The group collaborates frequently with Muskingum University Music Department student ensembles and faculty artists.
The Muskingum University Concert Choir is under the direction of Dr. Zebulon Highben, Muskingum University Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. Dr. Highben also directs the Muskingum Choral Society, a "town and gown" choir open to Muskingum University students, faculty, and staff as well as members of the surrounding community.
The concert is free to Muskingum University students, faculty, and staff with their University ID, and open to the public with tickets priced at $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for youths, and free for those under age 5. Tickets are available at the door.
