Fall Concert Features Wind Ensemble and Concert ChoirThe Muskingum University Wind Ensemble and Concert Choir performed a joint concert on Nov. 1, 2024, in Brown Chapel.
The Concert Choir’s program, “When We Arrive at Home,” presented a collection of songs that explored finding meaning and contentment in community and within ourselves, despite turmoil in the world all around us and our own individual challenges. The three themes of the program focused on searching, patience, and arrival.
The choral works included “Batter My Heart" and “Three-Person God” by Richard Nance, “Shall We Gather at the River” arranged by Daniel Hall, “Dhire-Dhire” by Reena Esmail, “Rejoice in the Lord Alway” from the 16th century, “Sure on this Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen, and “Heavenly Home (Hallelujah, No. 3)” by Shawn Kirchner.
Assistant Professor of Music Daniel Strychacz directed the Concert Choir with Eunji (Alice) Baik as collaborative pianist.
The Wind Ensemble’s program, “Music of the Spheres,” explored the connection between music and science, with an underlying theme of human technological development. Works represented different scientific concepts, ranging from the stunning colors of a sunset to the four primary elements, and culminated in a work that asks the question what happens when technology goes too far.
Conducted by Associate Professor of Music David Turrill, the Wind Ensemble performed “Fanfare Hayabusa” by Satoshi Yagisawa, "Dusk" by Steven Bryant, “Critical Mass” by Todd Stalter, “Defying Gravity” by Steven Reineke, and “The Machine Awakes” by Steven Bryant.
Student Conductor James Lones ’25 led the Wind Ensemble in “Elements (Air, Water, Earth, Fire)” by Brian Balmages.
