Athletic Teams Host Youth CampsMuskingum University’s athletic teams hosted a growing number of youth sports camps throughout the summer of 2024.
“The increased number of youth camps hosted by our coaches and programs continues to showcase our appreciation for our local communities within the region,” said Director of Athletics Kari Winters ’08, ’10G. “The educational and social aspects of our athletic camps benefit campers, camp counselors, and coaches alike. We ultimately hope that our camps build a deeper love for the game in the lives of our participants and their families.”
Football held their Elite High School Football Camp in June, welcoming 75 high school students. “Students came from throughout Ohio as well as from Pennsylvania and West Virginia,” said Football Head Coach Erik Ieuter. “It was the most well-attended camp to date, and we received very positive feedback on the instructions and coaching from our Muskie Football coaching staff and players.”
The June Men’s Lacrosse camp brought 59 high school student-athletes from seven different states to Muskingum’s campus. Campers took part in multiple drills, positional specific training, station work, and scrimmage games. They and their families also enjoyed a campus tour, Q&A sessions with Muskingum players and coaches, and an admission information session. Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Michael Jablonski ‘20G said, “What makes our camp special is the energy our current players bring to their interactions with the high school students. We have many repeat campers.” The team’s next high school camp will take place in September.
Men’s Basketball hosted a June camp for 40 youths aged 6-14. In July, they held a high school team camp, with 15 high school varsity basketball programs on campus competing against each other. “Multiple men’s basketball alumni came back to help coach the team camp, which was great,” noted Men’s Basketball Head Coach Nathan Wahle. A prospect camp for high school student-athletes will be held on Sept. 15.
In July, Volleyball hosted 36 middle and high school students for the Ohio Elite Club’s pre-tryout skills clinic and also welcomed more than 60 K-6 graders for a mini camp on the fundamentals of volleyball. “We were so excited to have these young athletes in our gym,” reflected Volleyball Head Coach Taylour Huey '18. “Youth camps provide a great opportunity for our current Muskingum students to connect to our regional community in a fun atmosphere.”
Twenty-six high school students from states across the country attended the June Bowling Camp and Scholarship Tournament. Bowling Head Coach Doug Smith said, “Their experience focused on both the mental and physical aspects of the game through classroom sessions and lane practice. They also toured the campus, stayed overnight in a residence hall, and competed in the tournament the next day.”
Baseball, STUNT/Cheer, and Women’s Lacrosse also hosted summer youth camps.
