Muskingum Celebrates the Class of 2024
Students at Commencement

Muskingum University celebrated the Class of 2024 on May 3 and 4, 2024.

The weekend began Friday evening with the Senior Sendoff at 7 p.m. in the Bullock Complex, where graduating seniors shared a toast with faculty and staff.

The traditional Baccalaureate was held in Brown Chapel at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. The theme of the 2024 service was “Cultivating Kindness."

The Graduate Hooding Ceremony immediately followed in the Chapel. The master’s degree candidates received their hoods from their program directors, with President Susan Hasseler and Chair of the Board of Trustees Cheryl Hetrick Carpenter ’86 offering remarks.

The centerpiece of the weekend was the Commencement Ceremony, held at 2 p.m. in the Steele Center. Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Business Information Systems, and Master of Applied Leadership degrees were granted.

Dr. Debra Clausing Sudan ’85 delivered the Commencement Address and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. A pioneering abdominal transplant surgeon, Dr. Sudan is Division Chief of Abdominal Transplant in the Department of Surgery, Professor of Surgery, and Professor of Pediatrics at Duke University. She was the first woman honored with Duke’s Master Surgeon Award and plays a leading role in national and international societies in her profession. She was honored with a Muskingum alumni Distinguished Service Award in 2023.

Associate Professor of Religion Melissa Conroy presented the Charge from the faculty, Senior Class Representative Ethan Miller ’24 presented the Charge to his classmates, Chair Carpenter presented the Charge from the Board of Trustees, and President Hasseler concluded the ceremony with the President’s Charge.

Retiring faculty members Professor of Accounting Martin Brady and Associate Professor of Nursing Janelle Guentter were recognized during the ceremony.

Following the commencement exercises, Muskingum’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates were welcomed into their profession with the Nursing Pinning ceremony in Brown Chapel at 4:30 p.m.
