Muskie Connections: The Impact Center Job Fair

In late January, Muskingum University was filled with the excitement of students and alumni connecting at the second annual Impact Fair. Hosted by the Impact Center, nearly 30 employers promoted a range of job types including full-time, part-time, internship, and summer opportunities. Among the attendees were two alumni with inspiring journeys, each eager to give back to the university that shaped their careers. Luke Fabian and Brandon Walker, both graduates from the Class of 2014, brought unique opportunities and perspectives to the event.

Luke Fabian ’14, now the Education Director at Deerassic Park, shared his unexpected path from being a high school teacher to helping lead a nonprofit organization. “I was an education major for PE and health,” he said. “After teaching at Maysville High School for three years, I transitioned to Deerassic Park, where we connect kids to the outdoors through field trips, summer camps, and community events. As a nonprofit, we focus on making everything at little to no cost for families.”

Luke’s booth offered opportunities for education majors, biology and life sciences students, and even business and marketing majors. “We also run a seasonal campground and carryout, so there’s something for almost any major,” he explained. For Luke, returning to Muskingum was a chance to reconnect with the community and recruit passionate students.

“Muskingum is such a tight-knit community, and it set me up to be where I am today. It’s great to come back and grow those relationships.”

At another booth stood Brandon Walker ’14, branch manager for Fastenal, a company specializing in supply chain solutions for the oil and gas industry. A double major in business management and marketing, Brandon credited Muskingum for giving him his start. “Muskingum feels like home,” he said. “It’s where I got my foundation, and now I want to provide information about careers that I didn’t have when I was in school.”

Brandon manages inventory, cost-saving goals, and strategic partnerships for his clients. But, what truly stood out was his passion for promoting opportunities for students. “We offer paid internships and are flexible with students still in school,” he shared. “That’s actually how I started—Fastenal gave me a chance as a senior when other companies were looking for experience I didn’t have. We like to promote from within, and I’ve been here ever since.”

For both alumni, returning to Muskingum for the Impact Fair wasn’t just about recruiting—it was about giving back. “I was in your shoes once,” Brandon said. “I understand what you’re going through and want to help because I can relate.”

Luke echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of staying connected to one’s alma mater. “Muskingum’s tight-knit community makes it easy to come back and grow relationships, both personally and professionally.”

As students connected with alumni like Luke and Brandon, the Impact Center Job Fair transformed into more than just a career event—it became a celebration of the lasting Muskie spirit. Both alumni exemplified what it means to be a Muskie: grounded in community, committed to helping others, and always eager to give back.
