Graduate Assistant - PLUS Program

Muskingum University invites applications for a Graduate Assistant for its PLUS program.  The Graduate Assistant for PLUS supports students’ transition to college by providing instruction in academic strategies, tutoring in course content, monitoring course grades, and collaborating with students to work towards their goals. The GA will support students’ achieving independence by focusing on students’ strengths, promoting executive functioning skills, fostering self-advocacy skills, and collaborating with students to prepare for future careers.  Subject to the terms of the University's Graduate Assistant Program, the GA will receive a tuition waiver.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support assigned students’ transition from high school to college to career through individualized tutoring and academic coaching.
  • Provide group and individualized instruction for students who request or require assistance with course assignments and independent work. 
  • Assist students with understanding directions, prompts, and assignments. 
  • Assist students with prewriting strategies, such as listing, brainstorming, webbing, chunking, etc. 
  • Assist students with postwriting strategies, such as editing, proofreading, and revising strategies.
  • Model and foster independent study skills, time management, organization, prioritizing, problem-solving, executive functioning skills, and creating good study routines for assigned students.
  • Monitor students' work completion and provide accountability by having them sign in/sign out, record what they worked on, and check off tasks on their to-do lists. 
  • Demonstrate assistive technology apps to support writing, such as Grammarly, AI, graphic organizers, etc.
  • Provide engaging workshops to support students and Disability Resource Services staff in further developing writing strategies.
  • Review assigned students’ academic history, strengths, challenges, interests, and academic strategies in order to incorporate into individual tutoring sessions.
  • Recognize assigned students’ challenges and address lack of follow-through
  • Collaborate with instructors, family, and other Disability Resource Services staff to support individual students.
  • Document all contacts with students, instructors, family members, and other DRS staff.
  • Learn and incorporate new tutoring and learning strategies from professional development.
  • Actively participate in PLUS professional development and staff meetings including Back-to-Work Week and Semester Wrap-Up Days.
  • Assist with and attend PLUS special events, which may be held in the evenings or on weekends.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES   

  • Admission, or ability to be admitted, to one of Muskingum's graduate programs.
  • Ability to problem-solve, think critically, be creative and resourceful, confront challenges, recognize accomplishments, and detail oriented.
  • Ability and willingness to receive feedback and to learn and implement new tutoring strategies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student records.
  • Ability to represent the University in a professional manner. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365, email, Internet, and other computer applications.

PREFERED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience working with students with disabilities and/or students who are academically at-risk.
  • Experience tutoring or teaching middle school, high school, or college students.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, listening, written and oral communication skills.
