Chemistry Lab Manager

Muskingum University invites applicants for a part-time Chemistry Lab Manager.  This position is responsible for maintaining supervision of the chemistry stockroom and preparation of laboratories. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise the chemistry stockroom and preparation for laboratories
  • Supervise student assistants, including:
    • chemical/equipment preparation activities
    • completion of all student employment paperwork 
    • coordinate student assistants’ work schedules and approve work hours for payroll 
    • train student assistants in the following areas:
      • laboratory and stockroom safety
      • preparation and dispensing of chemical solutions
      • proper cleaning of laboratory areas, glassware and equipment
      • preparation of laboratory areas prior to classes
      • proper maintenance of lab equipment
  • Prepare all reagents and special solutions for all laboratories, as scheduled by the faculty
  • Maintain chemical, equipment, and apparatus inventory levels in collaboration with the department chair, including preparation of purchase orders and contact with chemical suppliers to ensure “best price”
  • Supervise the checking-in and out process of students in the laboratory courses
  • Ensure proper storage and condition of chemicals, equipment, and lab apparatus in accordance with OSHA requirements
  • Ensure proper waste disposal of spent chemicals

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Associate’s degree in a science field of study.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Chemistry experience is highly preferred.
