Muskies Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day With Service
As of Jan. 1, 2024, Muskingum University added Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an observed University holiday. Classes are not scheduled and offices are closed.
While traditionally classes were not held on this holiday to allow students to participate in service-learning projects organized by the University, the designation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an observed University holiday expands these opportunities to employees.
Students, faculty, staff, and alumni can now work together in a Day of Service to serve our region and promote goals of justice, inclusion, and community.
The University’s sponsored service locations for Jan. 15, 2024, included:
- Beckett House Senior Living Community
- Breaking Free Therapeutic Riding Center
- East 40 Church of Christ
- Habitat for Humanity
- McDaniel’s Greenhouse
- NCAARD (New Concord Area Arts & Recreation District)
- North Terrace Church of Christ
- The Fieldhouse
After completing their service projects, volunteers shared a meal and reflections on their experiences.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1983. In 1994, it evolved to become a national day of community service as well as a celebration of the principles of equity and justice to which Dr. King dedicated his life.
