In honor of Earth Day, April 22, 2021, Muskingum University highlighted academic and campus life initiatives supporting sustainability and stewardship of the natural world.

The Division of Natural, Health, and Applied Sciences sponsored a student capstone poster session on display in the lobby of the Boyd Science Center. The posters spanned across the disciplines. Seniors in the Animal Studies major, under the guidance of Professor of Biology Dr. Amy Santas, contributed nine posters, which include internship overviews completed at the Wilds (Hellbenders and American Burying Beetles), through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and at a local animal rehab center. In conjunction with the poster session, the University’s chapter of the American Chemical Society gave away succulent plants for Green Chemistry Day. 

Beta Beta Beta, the Biology Honorary Society, erected bluebird boxes on campus, and the Muskingum University Birding Club, led by Professor of History Bil Kerrigan, was active in a variety of bird watching trips this past winter and spring.  

Beginning in early May, six students will be assisting Professor of Biology Jim Dooley and Professor of  Natural Science Danny Ingold with grassland bird research at The Wilds. Some of the species they will be studying are on the threatened list as a result of habitat loss.

The Outdoor Initiative & Recreation Club, led by President Oliver Rogers ’23, offers a wide variety of outdoor experiences to enhance student connections to and appreciation for the natural world.
