Muskingum University has announced the honorary degree recipients for its upcoming 2021 Commencement ceremonies.
 
University trustee Darrell Hazell '86 will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and deliver the address at the 176th Undergraduate Commencement.  Three in-person undergraduate ceremonies will be held from May 7 to May 8, to accommodate social distancing and safety protocols. These ceremonies have been carefully designed to protect health and safety while permitting our graduates to experience the pride and excitement of a live ceremony shared with those closest to their hearts.  Each ceremony will have limited guest capacity and all three ceremonies will be recorded, with videos available on the commencement webpage.
 
“Darrell Hazell is an inspiring example of the impact an individual can have as a coach, educator, mentor, and student advocate,” said Muskingum University President Susan S. Hasseler.  He has led a distinguished coaching career for more than three decades, serving at the collegiate and professional level, including as Assistant Head Coach at The Ohio State University, Head Coach at Kent State University and at Purdue University, and Wide Receivers Coach for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.  He is known for guiding his student-athletes on and off the field, in their study habits, campus life conduct, and community impact. He is a member of Muskingum’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
 
Tami Bowling Fitzgerald '81, '98G will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and will deliver the address for Muskingum’s 29th Graduate Commencement, which will be held virtually on May 6, 2021.
 
“Tami Bowling Fitzgerald is a distinguished educator, whose passion for teaching and learning has created significant impact,” President Hasseler said.  Recognized by the State of Ohio as a Master Teacher, Ms. Fitzgerald has been a STEM educator for more than 30 years at West Muskingum High School and has taught a variety of courses as an adjunct professor at Muskingum University.  She has represented STEM educators at the national level, including in the STEM Mentoring Café program with the U.S. Departments of Education and Energy and at the White House STEM Master Teacher Corps Roundtable, and she currently serves as the Director of  Outreach and Engagement for the National Board of Certified Teachers.
