On Campus
Muskingum University Lights Up Campus, Officially Ringing in the Holiday SeasonMuskingum officially kicked off the 2020 holiday season on campus during the University’s annual “Celebration of Light” on Monday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The virtual ceremony, aired on Orbit Media’s WMCO 90.7 radio, featured remarks from President Hasseler and Chaplain Julia Wright, and a poetry reading by Dr. Jane Varley, Professor of English and Chair of the Arts and Humanities Division.
During President Hasseler’s remarks, she reminded the campus community that "even when the days are getting shorter, and the darkness comes earlier and stays longer, it is important to remember that there is hope, the light will return, and that Christmas, no matter how different it may feel this year, is still Christmas. As you enjoy the lights and see that long string of magenta lights on the bridge, remember that our hearts are all connected this holiday season, and are always connected, as part of Muskingum's Long Magenta Line."
Chaplain Wright encouraged everyone to remind themselves of the simple joy of seeing the lights shine. “I encourage you to find a friend from your bubble, mask up, and walk around campus looking at the lights,” Wright said. “As you walk around, remind yourselves that even in a year where nothing is the same, there are still Christmas lights. The stars are spectacular tonight – don’t forget to look up.”
Dr. Varley bookended the ceremony with a beautiful poem penned by Dr. Maya Angelou titled, “Amazing Peace,” which she (Angelou) recited several years ago for a tree lighting at the White House. Following the ceremony, WMCO played Christmas music to enjoy while viewing the lights.
So, as President Hasseler and Chaplain Wright suggested, go out when you can, soak in the lights, and enjoy this holiday season. We are truly thankful for each and every one of you. Happy Holidays!
