Seniors in Muskingum’s acclaimed Nursing department hosted the University’s annual flu clinic on Tuesday, Sept. 29. In coordination with University leadership and the Rambo Memorial Health Center in Muskingum County, immunizations were offered free to all students, faculty and staff to ensure the continued health and wellbeing of the campus community.

Under the guidance of Dr. Michele Miller, associate professor of Nursing at Muskingum, student leaders in the program helped develop, promote and ultimately deliver the free “Boost Your Immunity and Boost Your Community” clinic.  

"My job during the event, like all senior nursing students, was to administer vaccines, direct traffic, and to help educate and answer questions about the flu vaccine,” said Chandra Smitley, a senior in Muskingum’s Nursing department. 

According to the CDC, getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever during 2020-2021 to protect yourself and the people around you from the flu, and to help reduce the strain on healthcare systems responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The group’s three recommended actions to preventing the flu include:
 

1. Get a flu vaccine,
2. Practice everyday preventive actions, and
3. Take antiviral medication to treat flu if your doctor prescribes them.
    

Following this recommended guidance, Muskingum strongly encouraged participation in the event and made sure the vaccine was accessible to all by making it free – both of which boosted involvement according to Smitley.

“We had a line of socially-distanced people waiting for the doors to open this morning which was so encouraging as it means folks around campus are serious about maintaining good health,” Smitley said. “Our goal was to deliver as many flu shots as possible, and with the support of the University we were busy all day and able to do so.”
