Muskies spent time doing right on campus and throughout the community today as the University celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Nearly 100 volunteers made up of students, faculty, and staff met early for breakfast and heard remarks from Provost Dr. Nancy Evangelista then broke off into several groups to visit various locations to positively impact the community. Groups volunteered at local churches, food banks, a healthcare facility, a preschool, and participated in a MLK prayer breakfast at the North Terrace Church of Christ. During the prayer breakfast, Muskingum University President, Susan Hasseler, presented a scholarship to junior communication major Teara Hill.

 According to Julia Wright, chaplain for MU Student Affairs, this day celebrates the power of service. “Today we do small acts of service in hopes that those small acts add up to a larger action, and help us make a habit of caring for the community and the world around us,” said Wright.  “Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamt of a better world based on human dignity, opportunity, love and hope. By turning our “day off” into a “Day On” we publicly state our commitment to service as an institution and as individuals and promise to carry on the legacy of Dr. King.”  

 The day was a full campus effort, with faculty and staff pitching in both Sunday and Monday to set up, lead groups, and to facilitate the process. In several cases, students volunteered to stay for a longer period of service and were joined by community members to make a true impact. Way to go Muskies! #MLKDAY #MUDAYOFSERVICE
