Johnny Barba began his college education elsewhere, but discovered a love for neuroscience and realized that an excellent program existed at Muskingum University – practically in the Byesville native’s backyard. He transferred to Muskingum for his sophomore year and will graduate in May of 2018 with a double major in neuroscience and psychology.
Transferring from one school to another can be a notoriously difficult process, but “the Muskingum staff made the experience exceptionally […] easy,” Johnny says.
Johnny jumped right into campus life, joining Rotaract and Psychology Club, and serving as the transfer student senator. He is currently serving his second term as Rotaract President and his first as Psychology Club president. He previously served as president of the Pre-Health Club and the American Chemistry Society.
When asked how his expectation of Muskingum compared with his experience, Johnny was quick to respond: “Surpassed without a doubt. The people are incredible and I love the fact that no matter which building on campus you walk into, people always greet you and say hello with a smile or a witty comment or joke. In fact, most of them will learn your name; this, in my opinion, is a huge deal about a consumer and product because, after all, college is a product – you’re the consumer. Do what’s healthy and come to Muskingum!” He adds that “The professors are extremely generous with their time and desire to help any student.”
Johnny recommends flexibility to future college students. He explains, “Coming to college, you may have a plan or agenda that you think must be executed perfectly. Not quite, future Muskie. While being ahead of the game is highly recommended, don’t be upset when that plan changes. Instead, welcome the changes and challenges as adventures and don’t be afraid to make hard decisions!”
