About President Hasseler
Dr. Susan S. Hasseler became Muskingum University’s twenty-first President on July 1, 2016.
A leader, teacher, and scholar with a deep commitment to the transformative power of an engaging and high-impact liberal arts education, President Hasseler is leading the Muskingum campus community in collaboratively designing and implementing multiple strategic initiatives that will ensure a thriving future for a broad continuum of learners and for the institution as a whole.
Before beginning her presidency at Muskingum, Dr. Hasseler served as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dean of the School of Business, Education and Social Sciences and Dean of Community Engagement at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Teacher Education and Professor of Education at Calvin University (formerly College) in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and as a faculty member at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.
Dr. Hasseler holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy, an M.A. in Special Education from the University of South Dakota, and a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education from Calvin University. She is also a graduate of the Harvard Institute for Educational Management, the Council of Independent Colleges Executive Leadership Academy, the American Council on Education National Leadership Forum, and the Association of American Colleges and Universities Greater Expectations Institute on Leadership.
An active and engaged participant in the community, Dr. Hasseler serves as a member of the NCAA Division III President’s Council, the Council of Independent Colleges NetVUE Advisory Council, the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities Board of Directors, the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges Executive Committee, the Park National Bank (EAS) Board of Directors, the Genesis Healthcare System Board of Directors, and The Wilds Advisory Committee.
She is married to neuropsychologist Kenneth Hasseler, who also earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. They enjoy the visual and performing arts, athletics, hiking, exploring the architecture and geography of new places, and spending time with their son Jon, daughter-in-law Mallory, daughter Kaitlin, son-in-law Peter, grandsons Lewis, William, and Caspian, and their very friendly red labs Rowan and Blaize.
