Music Education

Muskingum University’s Music Department offers majors in music and music education and minors in music and musical theatre. With its five full-time and fourteen adjunct faculty, the Music Department is large enough to offer a variety of study and performance opportunities, yet small enough to ensure that the needs of individual students are consistently addressed.  

Students from across campus participate in numerous vocal and instrumental ensembles. Summer camps offer high school students the opportunity to hone their musical skills while enjoying Muskingum’s beautiful campus. 

An accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1937, the Music Department is also accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Ohio Department of Education. The Music Department is housed in Otto and Fran Walter Hall, one of the newest academic buildings at Muskingum, which boasts acoustically-designed classrooms and rehearsal facilities, a state-of-the-art music technology lab, and spacious studios and practice rooms. 

Mission

The mission of the Department of Music at Muskingum University is to develop the student-musician and to provide a quality music program within a healthy environment.  Within the scope of this mission, the department provides students with an aesthetic education through ensemble offerings, applied study, and music courses.  It is the objective of the department to provide students with knowledge, skills, comprehension, and competencies needed for entrance level demands of graduate schools, or choice of employment.

• Write goals and objectives for music instruction at all levels.
• Exhibit knowledge of appropriate teaching materials for all teaching levels and mediums.

• Demonstrate competent conducting and rehearsal techniques for a variety of teaching levels and mediums.
• Listen and create music with aesthetic discernment.
• Engage in music and the arts throughout their lives.
