Molecular Biology

About Molecular Biology

As an interdisciplinary program, the molecular biology program at Muskingum University is administered by faculty from the biology and chemistry departments. It is designed to provide students with a wealth of information about biological processes at the genetic and molecular levels through an integration of theory, application, and hands-on experiences in fundamental molecular techniques.

Mission

The Molecular Biology Program is committed to excellence in the education of students in ways that help them understand and appreciate the chemical nature of biological processes.  This is accomplished by providing them with instruction about biological processes and interactions at the gene and molecular (chemical) level through an integration of theory, applications, hands-on experience in fundamental molecular techniques, as well as on ethical, social, political and economic issues associated with the field, and through developing their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

The Molecular Biology Program supports the University’s Mission by developing the intellectual skills of the students which include problem-solving and critical-thinking, as well as by fostering the students’ ethical and social growth.  These endeavors will result in vocationally productive and socially responsible citizens.

Program Learning Goals

Students majoring in molecular biology should be able to be:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of chemistry and biology as they apply to the discipline.
  • Demonstrate well-developed critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, their understanding of scientific inquiries in the field of molecular biology.
  • Secure admission into graduate or professional programs, or employment in related fields.
