Fall Arts Preview
Art in the Palmer Gallery

Muskingum University’s fall 2024 arts schedule features three gallery exhibitions and an exciting slate of performances.

Palmer Gallery Exhibitions

The gallery season opens from Sept. 9 through Oct. 2 with the Eastern Ohio Artist Exhibition, featuring works by artists from New Philadelphia, Cambridge, Zanesville, and Columbus. The opening reception is from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 9, and a lecture and artist demonstration will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.

From Oct. 16 through Nov. 6, the gallery will host Connections and Harmony: Contemporary Lakota-Iroquois and Dine’ Perspectives, featuring artists Jim Yellowhawk of South Dakota and Elmer Yazzie of New Mexico. An opening reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 16 and a dance performance featuring Mr. Yellowhawk will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Caldwell Hall Thompson Theatre. In addition, a lecture and artist demonstration featuring Mr. Yazzie will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 29.

The final gallery show of the fall semester is the 2024 Muskingum University Student Competition Exhibition, from Nov. 18 through Dec. 3. The opening reception is Nov. 19 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. On Nov. 21 at 2 p.m., Professor of Art Yan Sun will speak on the “Challenges of Using AI in Art Education.”

Music Performances

Associate Professor of Music Harsha Abeyaratne kicks of the fall concert season with a piano recital on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in Brown Chapel.

Magenta Homecoming weekend is bookended by the annual Homecoming Collage Concert on Friday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. in Brown Chapel and a Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra (SEOSO) concert on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at Secrest Auditorium (Zanesville, Ohio).

November will feature student ensembles, with Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble on Nov. 1 and Chamber and Jazz Ensembles on Nov. 18 in Brown Chapel, and Musical Theatre Ensemble on Nov. 21 in Walter Hall, all at 7 p.m.

Talented regional high school students will gather on campus for the Choral YouthFest on Nov. 9 and Instrumental YouthFest on Nov. 16.

Begin Thanksgiving week with the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, as they present their Fall Concert on Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. in Brown Chapel.

In December, celebrate the holidays with Muskingum at the annual SEOSO Holiday Concert on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Secrest Auditorium (Zanesville, Ohio) and the annual Muskingum Christmas Festival featuring musical performances, readings, and Christmas carols on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in Brown Chapel.

Theatre

The Theatre Department will present their fall production on Oct. 24-27 in Caldwell Hall’s Thompson Theatre. Details for the production, along with performance dates for the annual First Year Show, will be announced soon.
