Presidential Inauguration Has Muskingum ConnectionWhen the President’s Own Marine Band performed the Inaugural Prelude on January 20, 2021, their set included Godspeed, an arrangement of Godspeed, John Glenn, a work commissioned by Muskingum University and premiered on campus on April 13, 2018, to honor the life and legacy of fighter pilot, astronaut, and U.S. Senator John Glenn ’43.
Both works were composed and arranged by Ohio native Major Ryan J. Nowlin, Executive Officer and Senior Assistant Director of the President’s Own Marine Band.
Godspeed, as performed at the inauguration, was first adapted from the original Godspeed, John Glenn for a 4th of July White House flyover.
Godspeed, John Glenn was premiered by the Muskingum University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands Dr. David Turrill, during the "O Beautiful for Heroes Proved" concert in Brown Chapel.
Major Nowlin is from North Royalton, Ohio, and is a graduate of Bowling Green State University. He served as an Ohio music educator for more than a decade before joining the Marine Band in 2010.
