Bio

Michelle Oyakawa is an Assistant Professor of Sociology.  Her work focuses on leaders and organizations that are trying to effect social change for racial and economic justice.  She is the 2022 winner of the William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship.Professor Oyakawa is coauthor of Prisms of the People: Power and Organizing in Twenty First Century America with Hahrie Han and Liz McKenna (Prisms of the People_ Power & Organizing in Twenty-First-Century America, Han, McKenna, Oyakawa) and Smart Suits, Tattered Boots:  Black Ministers Mobilizing the Black Church in the Twenty First Century with Korie Edwards. Her research has also been published in academic journals including Qualitative Sociology, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, American Journal of Cultural Sociology, Journal of Community Psychology, and Sociology of Religion.
