Financial Aid Counselor

Muskingum University invites applications for a Financial Aid Counselor. This position serves as a financial aid advisor to students, parents, and prospective students regarding all aspects of financial aid.  This position analyzes, processes, awards, and revises financial aid offers for an assigned advising group, while providing exceptional customer service as part of the enrollment team, thereby helping to meet university goals. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Counsel and advise students and parents on all aspects of student financial aid including financial aid eligibility, application procedures, aid programs, costs, payment and financing options, and indebtedness. Counseling may take place in person, by phone, by email, or virtually. 
  • Serve as financial aid advisor to assigned group of students (may include traditional undergraduates, adult students, or graduate students)  
  • Package federal, state, and institutional grants and loans for designated advising group in accordance with federal, state, and institutional guidelines. 
  • Review and makes decisions using professional judgment on financial aid appeals and requests for special circumstances consideration 
  • Counsel students on satisfactory academic progress and its effect on financial aid eligibility. 
  • Notify students within advising group of changes in eligibility of awards and counsel them on alternatives to amend the situation 
  • Review applications and documents from advising group to resolve conflicting information, address complex finance issues, and request and review appropriate documentation to complete verification. 
  • Assist with Federal Direct and Private Loan Processing 
  • Import and Export Federal Student Aid data essential for awarding and disbursing student financial aid
  • Promote FAFSA filing and understanding of financial aid programs as a member of the university enrollment team to entering students, current students, and the public as part of the larger professional financial aid community 
  • Attend professional development conferences, seminars, and workshops to stay abreast of current regulations in the student financial aid industry.  
  • Assist with support of the Admission and Graduate and Continuing Studies Offices as needed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic math functions accurately and on a regular basis. 
  • Ability to learn, apply, and monitor, University policies and federal regulations
  • Proven ability to use Microsoft 365 products, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook, and other general web-based or computer programs
