| The Alpha Chapter of Phi
Kappa Tau was founded in the Union Literary Society Hall in Miami'’s Old
Main Building on March 17, 1906. The four Honored
Founders were Taylor A. Borradaile, Clinton D. Boyd, Dwight
I. Douglass and William H. Schideler.
Founded as the Non-Fraternity Association to give Miami’s non- fraternity men a voice in campus political affairs, the organization changed its name to Phrenocon on March 6, 1909 because the name Non- Fraternity Association seemed too negative. Phrenocon became "national" in 1911 when a second chapter was formed at Ohio University. Additional Phrenocon chapters were established at Ohio State, Centre College (Danville, Kentucky), Mount Union College (Alliance, Ohio) and the University of Illinois. At Miami, Phrenocon began to have difficulty retaining members by the early ‘teens. Often, men joined Phrenocon then later dropped their membership and joined fraternities. The Miami chapters of Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon were founded by Phrenocon members. For that reason, Miami Chapter of Phrenocon withdrew from the National Phrenocon and adopted the name Phi Kappa Tau on March 9, 1916. The rest of the chapters agreed to the name change in December of that year and invited Miami to return to the national organization as Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau. Ten years later on Muskingum’s campus, a group of men, mostly of Scottish descent, began to search for a name typifying the purpose for which they organized. Because of the significance of the traditional Scotch life of independence, loyalty, definite ideals and steadfastness of purpose, they chose a name associated with Scotland– Alban. Expanding from a body of five members, led by the first president, John Smith, the organization continued to uphold and perpetuate in daily life the ideals upon which the charter group organized, thus making the club motto become a reality – "Esse Quam Videri" –" to be rather than to seem." The Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity was established in 1969 as the Delta Lambda chapter at Muskingum College from what was the Alban Club. With this transition, this chapter teamed with more than 60 years of heritage with a nationally respected fraternity. |
