Course Description: A
laboratory or field research project with an institution, agency,
business or corporation which
involves an environmental science related question/topic. The
project will be selected by the student in consultation with a
faculty member and will involve an extensive literature search and
experimental/observational data collection. In order to enroll in
this course a student must be an environmental science major with
senior standing. This course, in conjunction with Environmental
Science 421 (senior seminar course), is designed as the capstone to
round out the academic program of Environmental Science majors.
Course Learning Objectives:
- Understand and be capable of applying some field
and/or laboratory methodology and technology to assess environmental
conditions.
- Demonstrate the ability design and conduct an
original research project --- with the oversight of a faculty member or
research person.
- Produce final written report summarizing the
metholdology and results of the project.
- Further the development of the student's ability
to communicate environmental/scientific concepts both verbally and in
written form.
Course Requirements:
(1) Undertake an instructor
approved research project focused on an
einvronmentally related topic.
(2) Produce a 2-4 page research
proposal outlining the goals/objectives of the project as well as the
methods and general design of the project.
(3) Produce final written
research report which should include the following components: title
page, abstract, introduction, methods/study area, results, discussion,
literature cited, tables and/or figures.
Grading: The student's grade
will be based on the following criteria:
(1) Participation and completion
of environmentally related research project - (50% of grade)
(2) Research proposal stating
main goals (5% of grade)
(3) Final research report (45%
of grade)
