Muskies notch five set win against JCU

NEW CONCORD, OHIO, October 11, 2008 - The Muskie volleyball team beat John Carroll in a five-set thriller Saturday in the Muskingum Recreation Center. The Muskies won 25-19, 21-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-9. [boxscore]

In game one, the Muskies took the game 25-19, but John Carroll bounced back quickly to grab a 25-21 win in game two. In game three, Muskingum came away with a tight 26-24 advantage, but once again John Carroll would not go quietly as the Blue Streaks forced a game five following a 25-20 posting in the fourth game. In the rubber set, the Muskies stepped up to gain the win, taking the final game by a 15-9 margin.

Leading the way for the Muskies was senior Jessica McKenzie who tallied a team-high 14 kills, along with 39 attempts. McKenzie led all players in the block category as she marked up seven block solos and five block assists. Senior Allie Buckohr had a strong showing for the Muskies as well with her 13 kills, and game-high 56 attempts. Junior Nicole Biblis led the way in the dig column with a total of 40, while Buckohr added in 34 of her own. Also adding in with digs were freshman McKensie Smith with 20, freshman Molly Scholl with 15, and freshman Lindsey Worthington with 12. Leading the Muskies in assists was Scholl and Worthington who each had 18 on the day. Senior Kara Hamilton also had a solid line for the Fish with 11 kills, 32 attempts, three assists, six digs, two block solos and two block assists.

In the match, both teams had 55 kills, while the Muskies committed only 12 errors, compared to John Carroll's 32. Muskingum had a .196 hitting percentage, while John Carroll had a .095 hitting percentage.

As a team, the Muskies combined for 39 assists and had a total of 17 team blocks, while JCU finished with nine team blocks.

The Muskies return to action on Tuesday, October 14 when they travel to Wilmington College in conference action. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
