Two students earn scholarships to attend Ohio Foreign Language Association conference

Two Muskingum University students have earned scholarships to attend the Ohio Foreign Language Association’s (OFLA) annual conference, to be held this April in Columbus.

Brittany Jackson of Gnadenhutten and Krysten O’Connell of Sarahsville, both of whom are seniors, were nominated for the Conference Attendance Scholarship by the chair of Muskingum’s World Languages Department, Dr. Jean Morris, on the basis of their academic achievements and commitment to excellence in teaching.  They were chosen for the scholarships based in part on the strength of their essays explaining why they are choosing a career in World Languages.  Both students are Spanish licensure candidates.

The conference, titled The Times, They Are a-Changin’:  Embrace the Changes, Reap the Benefits—Teachers Helping Teachers, will allow Jackson and O’Connell to network with both current and future World Languages teachers, as well as to attend multiple conference sessions.

Both Jackson and O’Connell will graduate from Muskingum this May with degrees in Spanish and their teaching licensure and both plan to teach Spanish.  Jackson’s faculty advisors are Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Sandra Alzate and Professor of Education Dr. Joy Cowdery.  O’Connell is advised by Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Beth Butler and Dr. Cowdery.
