Awards for excellence in teaching, scholarship and faculty service granted during Opening Convocation
As a part of its Opening Convocation held August 30, Muskingum College recognized three of its faculty members for excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. The awards were presented by Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Julianne Maher.
The William Oxley Thompson Award for Excellence in Teaching was awarded to Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. David Craft. This award is named in honor of an alumnus whose career combined teaching, ministry and service as president of Miami University and The Ohio State University.
Dr. Craft joined the faculty in 1993. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Illinois College, his mater’s degree from Miami University and his doctorate from Western Michigan University.
The William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship was granted to Associate Professor of English Dr. Andre DeCuir and Associate Professor of Music Dr. Laura Schumann. This award is named for an alumnus who was a renowned scholar, educator and the founder and first president of the University of Chicago.
Dr. DeCuir joined the faculty in 1997. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and his doctorate from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Schumann joined the faculty in 1999. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, her master’s degree from the University of California and her doctorate from Texas Tech University.
The Cora I. Orr Faculty Service Award was bestowed upon Professor of Business A. Charles Drubel. It is named in honor of a Muskingum faculty member and administrator who served the college with devotion and distinction for four decades.
Mr. Drubel joined the faculty in 1986. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Duke University and his master of business administration degree from the College of William and Mary.
The Convocation address was presented by Linda Hierholzer Karn, a 1976 alumna of the college. Mrs. Karn is vice president of marketing with Market Systems, Incorporated of Chicago, Illinois.
Her career in marketing and sales began in 1980 when she became a broker with a major broker dealer. In Chicago, she has worked with Dean Witter, as well as serving as vice president of an options and trading firm. She also has been director of East Coast marketing and director of public relations for the Chicago Stock Exchange, and headed the marketing efforts of one of the largest specialist firms on the Exchange.
Mrs. Karn’s address focused on her belief that a Muskingum College education would benefit the assembled students as much as it benefited her life. She said, “The environment here at Muskingum has been a major part of the success in my life, and I’m sure it will be a part of your success, too. Being open to possibilities is a key to success in life, as well, and that is just one of the many things you will learn here.”
