Alumna Allison Kimmich named executive director of National Women's Studies Association

Allison Kimmich, a 1991 alumna of Muskingum College, has been named executive director of the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA).

Dr. Kimmich assumes the leadership of NWSA as its first full-time director. Previously, she had been director of Pre-College Programs and taught Women’s Studies at Barnard College in New York.

NWSA, based in College Park, Maryland, supports and promotes feminist teaching, learning, research, and professional and community service at the pre-K through post-secondary levels and serves as a locus of information about the inter-disciplinary field of Women's Studies for those outside the profession. It is the only professional association exclusively dedicated to the advancement of Women’s Studies.

Her prior experience includes working with the Women Involved in Living and Learning program at the University of Richmond and serving as a consultant for the Georgia Department of Human Resources’ sexual assault prevention program.

Dr. Kimmich was among the first wave of graduates earning a doctoral degree in Women’s Studies in the United States and of her new appointment said, “I am honored to continue the groundbreaking tradition by helping to lead the NWSA as it seeks to expand its membership base and promote the value of feminist education.”

As a student at Muskingum, Dr. Kimmich earned bachelor of arts degrees in English and French. She also was active on the staff of the Black and Magenta, the student newspaper; First Circle, the College’s literary magazine; Lambda Sigma, Phi Sigma Tau, the Muskingum College Chorus and the Muskingum Players. Following her graduation, she earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Her husband, Nikhil Deogun, is also a 1991 Muskingum alumnus and gave the address for the College’s 2003-2004 Opening Convocation. He is deputy Washington bureau chief of The Wall Street Journal, a post he accepted in March, 2004. Previously, he was the Journal’s media and marketing editor in New York.
