Pre-Law Society hosts major event
Muskingum University's newly-formed Pre-Law Society recently hosted the Ohioans to Stop Executions and Witness to Innocence Tour. Two men who had been wrongly convicted of crimes spoke to a packed Brown Chapel. Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Stacey K. Parker organized the event. Three with Muskingum ties honored at Remarkable Women luncheon
The Remarkable Women luncheon held March 16 at the John and Annie Glenn Historic Site honored three outstanding women with ties to Muskingum, past and present. Recognized were Muskingum alumna Annie Castor Glenn, legendary head softball coach the late Donna Newberry, and current student Kirsten Battaglia, who will graduate in May, summa cum laude, despite being blind. John and Annie Glenn visit New Concord for John’s 91st birthday
Muskingum alumnus and trustee John Glenn ’43 came home to New Concord recently to mark his 91st birthday, and a large crowd joined he and his wife and fellow alumna, Annie, for the big event. The John and Annie Glenn Historic Site hosted, which gave the couple of 70 years a chance to reminisce in the senator’s boyhood home, which houses the museum. WOUB Public Media features Muskingum’s First Step program
Dr. Eileen Henry, executive director of Muskingum’s PLUS Program talks about the First Step program with Bethany Venable of WOUB Public Media, Athens, Ohio. First Step offers students with ADHD or ADD the opportunity have a trial run at their college experience and to get a handle on skills needed for college. This year’s experience includes creating a video diary. “The video diary will help students analyze and adjust through the experience of being a college student,” said Dr. Henry.

New Muskies off to a great start with a coach's dream
Incoming first-year Muskingum students (and recent Zanesville High School graduates) Casedy Goins, Tyler Wood, Josh Blair, and Chandre Franklin are featured in the June 24 Zanesville Times Recorder in an article titled A Coach’s Dream. This year, all 19 ZHS graduating football players are moving forward in life and academics, with help from the Life Plan program, started by ZHS coaches. Mentoring, career counseling, and guidance are hallmarks of the program. Muskingum Head Football Coach Al Logan is mentioned in the piece which was written by writer Brandon Hannahs.

John Glenn ’43 receives Presidential Medal of Freedom
Muskingum University alumnus and trustee John Glenn ’43 has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, along with 12 other recipients.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is bestowed by the President of the United States and is, along with the Congressional Gold Medal, bestowed by an act of the United .States Congress.
Glenn received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2011.
President Obama presented the awards in a White House ceremony on May 29, 2012.

Students help their younger peers cope with the challenges of bullying
Muskingum University’s Community Action Learning in Forensics and C.A.S.S./M.I.N.D. programs have teamed up to mentor and tutor at-risk students in grades 4-12 on how to deal with bullying. Thanks to the innovative teaching of Professor of Education Dr. Linda Rogness, some Zanesville elementary school students have been learning to build surprisingly sophisticated robots, working in teams with some of Dr. Rogness’s graduate students. Softball team's season aspirations featured in Zanesville newspaper
The Zanesville Times Recorder featured the softball team in a February 27 article about the prospects for their 2012 season. The team traveled to the Rebel games in Florida on March 4, and home action started on March 15 against Malone University.

The Daily and Sunday Jeffersonian ran a February 26 feature story in its Horizons edition on Muskingum University radio, WMCO-90.7, and its move to live streaming on the web. Len Thomas ’52 shares a lifetime of music with a lucky audience in Coshocton
Len Thomas was featured in the Zanesville Times Recorder for a recent performance and workshop in Coshocton, where he shared a lifetime of musical experiences with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. John H. Glenn receives Congressional Gold Medal
Muskingum University alumnus and trustee John Glenn was one of four Americans to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The award, which is held by only 100 or so Americans, was presented to the former U.S. Senator and astronaut in a ceremony in the Capitol rotunda. Glenn, along with Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and Neil Armstrong, are the first veterans of the space program to receive the award. Student redistricting project presented to Zanesville City Council
The Zanesville City Council has sought the input of Muskingum’s Center for Regional Planning, as a part of the city’s efforts to begin discussions about redistricting, following the results of the 2010 census. Directed by Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Walter Huber, students working in the Center are providing basic data so the city can begin its work.
Jeff Zellers adds clarity to the complexities of college graduation rates
Vice President for Enrollment Jeff Zellers was among those who were interviewed for a Zanesville Times Recorder story on college graduation rates. In the article, he made the important point that truly accurate tracking of what happens to a student who leaves a school before he or she graduates is a difficult issue for every institution.
Class of 2015 gets a warm welcome from the media
Muskingum held its Convocation on August 30, opening its 175th year, and the media was on hand for the big day. Canton Repository tackles the story of a great Muskingum football career
Alex Thomas, a senior student-athlete and middle linebacker for Muskingum, was featured in an August 11 story in The Canton Repository. Named Muskingum's defensive MVP for the last two seasons, Thomas has 187 career tackles and is only 33 away from moving into the top 10 on Muskingum’s all-time list. Reporter Mike Popovich also talked to Head Coach Al Logan, who credited Thomas with a strong work eithic and an outstanding instinct forthe game. Beth DaLonzo discusses private college attendance in Ohio
Beth DaLonzo, senior director of admission and financial services at Muskingum, weighed in on a discussion about the number of Ohio students attending private colleges and universities in the state. The article, written by Jessica Alaimo of CentralOhio.com and appearing on the front page of the August 8 Zanesville Times Recorder, noted that Muskingum has seen an increase in the percentage of incoming students from Ohio, partly due to recruiting efforts and to Muskingum’s efforts to meet students’ financial aid needs. C. Todd Jones, president of the Association of Independent Colleges and University of Ohio is also quoted in the article, which mentions Denison University and The College of Wooster.
Professor's lecutre attracts media in Spain
Muskingum University Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Beth Butler
presented a lecture at a conference held recently in Salamanca, Spain,
and her insights were featured in the Spanish newspaper Todo Castilla y Leon. Dr. Butler’s lecture focused on the work of Spanish author Jordi Sierra i Fabra and his novel, Las Chicas de Alambre (Wire Thin Girls), which is an adolescent novel of the “novela negra” genre that centers on the issue of anorexia in the fashion industry.

Premiere performance of new composition a highlight of Walter Hall dedication
The April 15 dedication of Otto and Fran Walter Hall featured the premiere of a new musical composition by Brian E. Paulis, Muskingum’s adjunct assistant professor of composition and music technology. The piece was commissioned by David Turrill, Muskingum’s assistant professor of music, who directs the university’s Wind Ensemble, which performed the new music for the first time at the dedication. In mid-February, the Zanesville Times Recorder tapped Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Brian King to demystify the impact of rapidly changing developments in Egypt. Head Basketball Coach Gene Ford '74 receives hometown honor
Muskingum University Head Basketball Gene Ford ’74 recently added another accolade to a long and storied career. The basketball court at Cambridge High School is now the Gene Ford Gymnasium, recognizing Coach Ford’s stellar career there. Prior to his arrival at Muskingum, he coached there for 25 years, where he compiled a record of 400-183 and led his teams to 18 sectional titles, eight district crowns, five regional titles and five state tournament appearances.

Professor of Art described as "local treasure"
Yan Sun, professor of art at Muskingum, was called a “local treasure” in an April 9 front page article in the Zanesville Times Recorder. Sun’s life, both in China and in the United States, is outlined. That life includes a number of years in “re-education” during China’s cultural revolution. Most recently, The New Concord artist has donated a painting to the Zanesville Concert Association for auction.

Transcontinental meeting covered in The Daily Jeffersonian
Two groups of Muskingum University students had up-close meetings with a delegation traveling in the United States from Russia. A Post-Soviet Politics class and the university’s Model United Nations chapter met with a delegation involved with a variety of social and political groups in Russia. The meetings were facilitated by Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Richard A. Arnold.

The election of Jordan Stewart ’13 to New Concord Village council was featured in a recent edition of the Zanesville Times Recorder. He decided to run for the position after a year of attending council meetings and becoming interested in the issues the Village faces in its day-to-day operations.

Veterans’ support group featured in Zanesville newspaper
The Muskingum University Veterans’ Support Group was the subject of a feature story in a recent edition of the Zanesville Times Recorder. The group is headed by John Sidwell, Muskingum’s assistant to the registrar, who is a retired Marine.

The importance of diversity among students on college campuses was the focus of a February 28 feature in the Zanesville Times Recorder. Among those interviewed was Muskingum University Vice President for Enrollment Jeff Zellers and Landel Shakespeare ’12, who is a resident assistant in Moore Hall and has been a member of Muskingum’s Student Multicultural Affairs group.

Jackie Vascura, director of Muskingum’s career services office, offered tips to recent and soon-to-be graduates on a special WHIZ-TV series on job hunting. The segment aired on February 16. Students Adria LeMasters ’10 and Kacey Factor ’11 were also featured, discussing the value of their internship experiences. Vascura recommends networking, interning, and creating a concise resume. Steele was among those honored for their support of aspiring students at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund Prayer Breakfast, held January 18 in Zanesville and covered by the Times Recorder WHIZ-TV. Lady Muskies featured in The Daily Jeffersonian
The women's basketball team was featured in the December 13 issue of Cambridge, Ohio's newspaper, The Daily Jeffersonian, for their efforts to bring some Christmas cheer to those less fortunate. This year, they brightened the holidays for 65 children in the greater Muskingum County area.
Dr. Zook-Gerdau and Dr. Ingold discuss climate change summit with WHIZ-TV
Professor of Biology Dr. Danny Ingold, the Homer Anderson Distinguished Professor in the Natural Sciences; and Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Lois Zook-Gerdau weighed in on the United Nations’ Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen on WHIZ-TV’s December 9 evening news broadcasts. “I think that we have to take a lead role in dealing with climate change because other countries are not going to want to have big changes in their economy and in their energy usage if the U.S., which is one of the largest consumers, is not willing to be on board,” said Dr. Zook-Gerdau. Two Muskingum University professors discussed “what’s behind the ‘2012’ frenzy” with Daily Jeffersonian reporter John
Lowe in the Cambridge, Ohio newspaper’s November 20 issue. Professor of American Religious History Dr. Rick Nutt explained that stories of the end of the world have persisted for thousands of years. Professor Emeriti of History Dr. Lorle Porter called the frenzy “ludicrous…..they are trying to read a prediction of the future out of this."
Globetrotting student featured in The Newark Advocate
Caitlin Ecker ’10 who graduated on May 8, was featured in The Newark Advocate for her student teaching assignment with the French Teaching Assistantship Program sponsored by the French Ministry of Education and Cultural Services. She was the first Muskingum University student to be chosen for the assignment.
Charter Convocation receives excellent media coverage

New name for Muskingum
Muskingum's change from college to university drew strong media attention. The Daily and Sunday Jeffersonian, The Zanesville Times Recorder, WHIZ-TV and numerous radio stations all ran stories, each of which quoted President Anne C. Steele as saying, “The enduring characteristics of the institution we cherish and our tradition of educational excellence continue to be the hallmarks of Muskingum,” and that Muskingum’s extensive growth in graduate and professional programs made the change a natural next step.
Not-so-lazy days of summer for teachers in school
The Wheeling Intelligencer featured the now-common idea of teachers attending school during the summers, when their students don’t have to. The article cited the extensive summer programs offered at Muskingum University, and two of the teachers who are taking advantage of those programs to renew certifications or earn special teaching endorsements. Dr. Eric Law weighs in on mysterious "turtle rock"
Dr. Eric Law, associate professor of geology, was featured in an article on the Cincinnati Enquirer’s website. Dr. Law weighed in on a debate regarding a 220-pound sandstone rock that resembles the head of a turtle. Law is confident that someone carved the rock while others believe that the odd boulder was probably shaped by nature.
“The most significant feature is something I interpreted as a tool mark. They are shown at a well-protected location and are not easily destroyed by weather or erosion processes,” Law said. Dr. Law plans to present a paper on the turtle rock in this October at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Portland, Oregon.

Chess Center dedication receives excellent media coverage
The October 17, 2009, dedication of the Walter K. Chess Center drew a large crowd of alumni, trustees, faculty, staff and students, as well as significant media coverage. Both The Daily Jeffersonian and the Zanesville Times Recorder covered the historic day on campus. Earlier this year, both papers, as well as WHIZ-TV in Zanesville, were also treated to a preview of the new facility with a tour conducted by President Anne C. Steele.
Students and faculty create a new history of Muskingum College
Muskingum College, a new pictorial history, was released in the fall of 2009, and the Zanesville Times Recorder featured the effort in a front page article. Authored by Associate Professor of History Dr. Bil Kerrigan and two of his students, Heather Giffen ’09 and Ryan Worbs ’10, the book features hundreds of photographs, with captions researched and written by Worbs and Giffen.
The project, which took more than a year to complete, was particularly important to Giffen, who is a fifth generation Muskie. “I have a deep history with the institution and the town,” Giffen said, “This was meaningful to research. Now that I'm a graduating senior, it means even more.”

Dr. Bil Kerrigan named Person of the Year by The Daily and Sunday Jeffersonian
Associate Professor of History Dr. Bil Kerrigan was named one of three 2008 Persons of the Year by The Daily and Sunday Jeffersonian newspaper.
Each December, the newspaper’s editorial staff reflects on the past year, thinking back on those whose contributions have helped make the community better. Dr. Kerrigan was chosen for his leadership on a variety of important community projects, as well as his efforts to preserve the regions’ history.

Center for Child Development wins Three-Star Award and some media attention
Muskingum's Center for Child Development received a Three-Star Award from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the agency’s highest honor for excellence in a child care and education. The story appeared in both The Daily Jeffersonian and the Zanesville Times Recorder.
Cherie Bronkar featured for her literacy efforts in Madagascar
Cherie Bronkar, head of user services at the library, was featured in an article in the Zanesville Times Recorder for her efforts to bring a public library to the people of Madagascar. Her goal is to gain funding for what will be called the Malagasy People’s Library, and she has engaged both regional and national sources of help.
Muskingum's U.S. D.O.E. grant draws a media crowd
Muskingum was the only private college in Ohio to receive a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help train highly qualified teachers of students with disabilities such as learning disabilities, emotional disturbances and mental retardation. An August 4 press conference to announce the grant was covered by The Zanesville Times Recorder, The Daily Jeffersonian and WHIZ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Zanesville.

Student-firefighters featured in The Columbus Dispatch
Muskingum students Matt Hamsher, Josh DeWinter and Zach Rudy were featured in a 2007 Columbus Dispatch story on college students who also serve their communities as firefighters. The three are a part of the New Concord Fire Department, and in the article, Fire Chief Brent Gates spoke highly of their impact on his department. The story was then picked up by the Associated Press and has appeared in a wide variety of print and electronic media outlets across Ohio. To read the story, click here.

The Daily Jeffersonian (Cambridge) ran a front page story on Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Amy Santas and the cancer research she and some of her students are conducting at Muskingum. The story also chronicles her migration to Muskingum from a major west coast institution, and covers the support for her work that she has received from the Muskingum.

The impact of Ohio Governor Ted Strickland’s proposed cuts to the Ohio Student Choice Grant was the subject of a story in The Columbus Dispatch. Jeff Zellers, vice president of enrollment at Muskingum, was interviewed for the story, along with other senior level administrators at other Ohio colleges, to discuss the possible consequences of the proposed cuts.

President Anne C. Steele was interviewed by The New York Times in 2006 for an article written by Jonathan Glater and Alan Finder that surveyed the impact of tuition strategies at colleges and universities. Muskingum is considered the institution that successfully pioneered tuition reduction strategy, and the article cites the positive results that strategy produced at Muskingm. Dr. Paul Reichardt featured in article on helping students make important decisions
Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Paul Reichardt was featured in a front-page article in the Zanesville Times Recorder. The article focused on what colleges are doing to help students make some of their most difficult academic and career decisions. In his interview with reporter Holly Richards, Dr. Reichardt cited the many personalized services Muskingum offers, including the first-year seminar class and other, one-on-one consultations the students have at their disposal.

Dr. Eileen Henry interviewed by National Public Radio affiliate WOUB regarding nationally recognized PLUS Program and "First Step"
Dr. Eileen Henry, executive director of the Center for Advancement of Learning, was interviewed by National Public Radio affiliate station WOUB in Athens, Ohio. She spoke with their news director, Fred Kight, about First Step, a summer camp designed to improve the academic skills of persons with learning disabilities and/or ADHD.
The Center for the Advancement of Learning has provided academic support to Muskingum students for more than two decades. "Participants in First Step develop a better understanding of their unique learning styles, as well as plans for improving their opportunities for academic success," Dr. Henry said.
Muskingum's nationally-recognized PLUS program was also mentioned in the interview. The program offers comprehensive academic support services for students with specific learning disabilities. Those services include tutoring by qualified professionals, advice regarding the number and mix of courses, and group study opportunities.
Beacon Journal notes biology professor’s work at The Wilds
Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Danny Ingold was interviewed by The Akron Beacon Journal for a story on the importance of reclaimed mining land as a new habitat for certain bird populations. The article focused on his work at The Wilds, a 10,000 acre reclamation project that is home to a major animal habitat and research facility. Dr. Ingold has been conducting research at The Wilds with Muskingum students as a part of classroom experiences during the regular academic year and as a continuing study during Muskingum's Summer Fellows program. The story was picked up by the Associated Press and distributed to throughout Ohio.
Geology professor featured in The C olumbus Dispatch and on Associated Press radio
Assistant Professor of Geology Dr. Stephen Van Horn was featured in an article in The Columbus Dispatch titled New interactive teaching technique clicks with students. The story describes Dr. Van Horn’s use of a Personal Response System (PRS) in his Introduction to Geology class. Muskingum is one of only a few institutions in the country that are using this system as a part a research project based at the University of Akron.
The system allows students to answer multiple choice questions through the use of a remote device that transmits their answers to a PowerPoint screen. The PRS then calculates and displays to what extent the answers were correct. Dr. Van Horn uses this measurement to stimulate class discussion and give the students a chance to better understand the material they are studying and, if necessary, reassess their answers.
In the article, students from the class give rave reviews to both the device and Dr. Van Horn’s effective use of it.
This same story was also picked up by the Associated Press, and ran on its national radio feed the day after it appeared in the Dispatch. It has also appeared on a news service provided by the Ohio Board of Regents.
