Respected Educator Delivers Graduate Commencement Address

Dr. Carl E. Van HornDr. Carl E. Van Horn, the founding director of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development and a Professor of Public Policy in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University delivered the commencement address to Muskingum graduate students. A scholar of this highest caliber, Dr. Van Horn is a nationally and internationally renowned expert in workforce and employment matters. Addressing a class of Master of Education and Master of Arts in Teaching recipients, Dr. Van Horn offered his reflections on the important role that educators will play in shaping our present and future economies.

Dr. Van Horn’s remarkable career includes an appointment to the Presidential Emergency Board—an entity charged with mediating labor/management disputes in the rail industry. As a result of his many contributions to the emergency board, Dr. Van Horn was subsequently appointed, by the U.S. House of Representatives, to its Transportation Advisory Committee. He also served as senior economist for the Joint Economic Committee of the United States Congress, and as a consultant to the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education, and the National Commission for Employment Policy and the National Science Foundation.

In his address, Dr. Van Horn charged the educators to “light the way for the next generation.” President Anne C. Steele noted, “Dr. Van Horn’s remarks provided an exceptional capstone experience to the education of our graduate students. His thoughtful guidance will serve these teachers well throughout their careers.”
