Noted Alumnus Delivers Baccalaureate Sermon
Muskingum College welcomed a member of its Class of 1954, Reverend Dr. J. Richard Hershberger, to deliver the baccalaureate sermon in the final ceremony for its graduating seniors. For several decades, Dr. Hershberger has distinguished himself as a leader in the Presbyterian Church.
Over the course of his remarkable career, Dr. Hershberger has worked tirelessly in service to others. In Oklahoma, he established an inner-city program that has become the Presbyterian Urban Ministry of the Indian Nations Presbytery. He has served as Moderator of the Synod of the Sun and as Moderator of the Presbytery of Colorado. Dr. Hershberger’s commitment to education is reflected in his two terms as Dean of the Synod Leadership Schools. Additionally, he has served on numerous boards, including the Boards of Trustees of World Neighbors, Infant Crisis Services and the Center for Psychotherapy, Education, and Spiritual Growth.
Addressing the graduating seniors, Dr. Hershberger challenged them to, “strive for understanding and unity” by moving beyond barriers. “Dr. Hershberger’s lifelong example of service was reflected in his inspirational sermon,” remarked President Anne C. Steele. “Our students can learn not only from his words but also from his actions,” she concluded.
