Muskingum College professor's book earns award from Presbyterian Historical Society of America

APRIL 14, 2004 - Muskingum College Professor of Religion Dr. Rick Nutt has been awarded a 2003 Francis Makemie Award for Outstanding Books about American Presbyterian or Reformed History. The book, Many Lamps, One Light: Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary received the award from the Presbyterian Historical Society.

Many Lamps, One Light was published last year to mark the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary's 150th anniversary. The 328-page volume, containing 16 pages of photographs and an extensive index, tells the story of the seminary from the founding in 1853 of one of its predecessor institutions, Danville Theological Seminary, to the present.

Dr. Nutt has organized his history of the Louisville Seminary around two themes. The first shows the ways in which the school has reflected developments in culture and Christianity in the United States during the last 150 years. The second theme Dr. Nutt explores is how, in the midst of change in the way it educated people for ministry in Presbyterian Church, the seminary has remained constant in its vision and commitment to serve the church.

Dr. Nutt is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and is himself a graduate of the Louisville Seminary. He explained his motivation for writing the book, saying, "About 12 years ago, the president of the seminary asked me to do an oral history and that led to doing this book."

He went on to say, "This isn't a book solely for those interested in this seminary. It should be of interest to anyone who wants to know more about theological education and the impact it has on our culture."

In addition to this most recent work, Dr. Nutt also is the author of Contending for the Faith: The First Two Centuries of the Presbyterian Church in the Cincinnati Area and The Whole Gospel for the Whole World: Sherwood Eddy and American Protestant Mission.

Many Lamps, One Light is available at the Muskingum College bookstore or from the publisher at www.eerdmans.com.
