Ferquently Asked Questions
Q: What is META?
A: Muskingum Emergency Text Alert is an emergency notification system that allows Muskingum University to quickly communicate health and safety-related emergency information via text message or email.
Q: What is e2Campus?
A: META is powered by the e2Campus mass notification system. The e2Campus solution allows designated university administrators to send time-sensitive messages to the mobile phones and/or email of META subscribers — regardless of geographic location.
Q: Will I receive unsolicited messages ("SPAM") on my mobile phone or email account?
A: No. META and e2Campus enforces a ZERO SPAM policy that clearly prohibits unsolicited messages. Furthermore e2Campus cannot or will not sell the contact information of META subscribers to third party marketers.
Q: Will this cost me anything?
A: Maybe. Depending on your wireless carrier provider and the plan you have, you may be charged a nominal fee to receive SMS text messages. For those with unlimited text messaging plans, there would be no additional charge. Consult with your carrier for further information.
Q: What is a selective mass notification system?
A: A selective mass notification system is defined as a platform to deliver a notification to an entire audience by all means necessary; therefore creating comprehensive coverage to increase the odds that a particular subscriber received the notification in a timely manner. Subscribers can be notified immediately by text message or email based on their notification preferences.
Q: What is a notification?
A: A notification is defined as a form of communication that delivers descriptive information about news or an event, unlike a bell or siren that communicates little information. For META, a notification will arrive in the form of a text message or email, based on your message delivery selections.
META/E2Campus Account Questions
Q: Can I change my contact preferences?
A: Yes. You can log into your account using your META account name and password to change your account settings and add different email addresses or phone numbers.
Q: How do I opt-out (remove myself) from receiving META alerts?
A: To opt-out, simply log into the META site with your META username and password. Under the "services" tab, clicking "Change Status " next to the appropriate phone number or email address will stop any e2Campus alerts from being delivered to you. You may opt-out of email alerts only, SMS alerts only, or the entire service.
Q: How do I control how I receive notifications?
A: You are given an opportunity to choose whether you want to receive notifications via cell phone text message or by email. You can also specify one other alternate contact number and email address.
Q: Can I receive META notifications somewhere else besides a cell phone?
A: e2Campus lets you specify up to two email addresses for notifications to be sent to.
Q: Will I be notified before my account expires?
A: Yes. You will be notified via SMS or by email that your account is nearing expiration and direct you to log into META to choose a new opt-out date.
Enrolling In META
Q: How do I sign up for e2Campus alerts?
A: If you are a student or employee you may sign up through the META web site. You will need your Muskingum University email username and password and follow the simple sign up process. You MUST have a cell phone to sign up for META. Once signed up you may choose to receive email alerts.
Q: Does the service work on multiple cell phone networks?
A: Yes. e2Campus is a cross-carrier service. See a list of wireless carriers supported.
Q: Do I need to install software on my phone?
A: No. e2Campus uses industry standard SMS text messaging protocol to send messages to your phone. Your mobile phone plan will need to accept text messages to work properly.
Troubleshooting for META
Q: What can I do if I didn't get the verification/validation code that was sent by e2Campus when I signed up for META?
A: Log into the META site and check your phone number and provider. If your number or provider is incorrect, then click on "Change Status" to update and resend a validation code. If you still do not, you’ll want to check with your provider as to what your service or plan includes.
Q: Is there any way to test my phone to see if SMS text messaging works on my phone?
A: The simplest way is to have a colleague or friend try to send you a text message and in return, you send them a text message. If either does not work, you'll want to check with your provider as to what your plan or service includes. If you can send and receive messages, visit the e2Campus cell phone test page to ensure you have chosen the right cellular phone carrier/provider.
Q: What happens if I don't get the campus-wide test message?
A: If you didn't get the campus-wide test message, then follow these procedures:
- Have a colleague/friend/coworker send you a text message from their cell phone. If this doesn't work, skip to step 3.
- If you are able to receive a message, then visit the e2Campus cell phone test page to test your service with them. If you receive their test message then the service is enabled and you'll want to log into META to verify your account information. If not, e2Campus can be reached directly at (800) 936-3525, option 0.
- If you were not able to receive a text message from a colleague/friend coworker, then you'll need to contact your cellular service provider for assistance with your service, plan or device.
If after completing these steps you are not able to receive a test call, contact Student Life at x8080.
